One link beyond: Solovyev’s vision of no fourth Rome

Although Solovyev perhaps imagined the wrong conqueror, he did correctly presage the imminent death of morally decaying civilization.

He wrote:

We have no desire to learn
From fallen Byzantium’s fate,
And Russia’s flatterers insist:
It is you, you are the third Rome.

No one ever wants to hear a doomsayer outside in the street. But the warnings are clear:

He who neglects love’s legacy,
Will be overcome by trembling fear…
And the third Rome will fall to dust,
Nor will there ever be a fourth.

The enemies are massing on the shores, and rightfully so. The flowers are wilting and the weed spores are blowing in the wind.
