The Parable of the Young Monk: Renouncing the world is easy — the Christian life will get us kicked out!

A certain young monk asked an elder: “Father, now do I have to completely renounce the world?” “Fear not,“ answered the elder, “if you live a really Christian life, the world will immediately renounce you.”

Of course, we can justify the act of renouncing the world throughout Holy Scripture. This line from St. Luke (shown at right), commemorated today, should do the trick in connecting this thought to this blog. “And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23)

St Luke is shown here in this idealized icon painting Mary, the God-Bearer. He is known to be one of the earliest Christian iconographers.
